Ken Takakura

Birthdate : February 16, 1931
Birthplace : Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka

Maybe one of the greatest actor in Japan History. Graduate of Meiji University in Tokyo, started his acting career with the Toei company in 1955 at the age of 24. He debuted a year later in “Denko Karate Uchi”. His breakout role would be in the Abashiri Prison series directed by Teruo Ishii. Often compared to Clint Eastwood with his quiet but tough and hard-working guy roles, Takakura appeared in more than 200 movies during his career. He is also know internationally in his Hollywood movies such as Sydney Pollack’s “The Yakuza” (1975) and Ridley Scott’s “Black Rain” in 1989, where he surprises American cops played by Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia with the line, “I do speak fucking English”. Takakura’s continuing appearances in TV commercials are proof of his lasting appeal. For the enka fan’s here is a nice cd with takakura best-of songs.
